Dr. Anderson’s scholarship examines how popular culture provides Americans with a shared language that enables a process of political self-fashioning. His ongoing research applies Theatre and Performance Studies to critique superheroes as popular American characters effectively restage whose faces are allowed to visually represent the country in the twenty-first century. He is currently developing his book manuscript “Truth, Justice and the Performative Way!” Superhero Performance and the Battle for Social Justice in Twenty-First Century America, which features his five-year ethnographic study of cosplayers at Comic-Con.
